Mental and emotional wellbeing
New - New approaches to preventing mental health problems arising among 16-25 year-olds
A multi-million pound initiative called ‘Right Here’, run by the Mental Health Foundation and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, is looking to fund pilots that will test different approaches to prevention work. First stage applications should be received by 18 December. The website’s ‘Resource Centre’ contains Mental Health Foundation research and information briefings.

Young Scotland in Mind
Led by Barnardos, this forum helps bring together voluntary sector organisations across Scotland to improve the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. Their website includes an online forum.

Bebo social network site for young people’s mental health
In collaboration with Penumbra and a group of young people, Well Scotland’s National Programme has created a profile page on Bebo where young people can chat and share information. The aim of the forum is to raise awareness of positive mental health and wellbeing, and help to create a young people’s ‘mental health movement’. It is targeted at young people aged between 13-18 years old.

Headroom campaign
Launched in summer 2008, Headroom is a long-term campaign (delivered on television, online and in the community) to raise awareness of mental health issues and encourage everyone to look after their mental wellbeing.

New - Scotland’s children’s diet too high in sugar
With sweets, biscuits and cakes playing too much of a part in what children eat, particularly in Scotland’s poorest communities. The report from the Food Standards Agency evidences there is some way to go to reach Scottish Dietary Targets.

New - The ABC of Sex and Relationships Education: Approaches, Benefits and Constraints
This international conference will take place 7-9 September 2009 in Birmingham. It will consider various approaches and explore some of the barriers to more effective working in the area.

Children 1st and ChildLine in Scotland held a conference in June 2008 on this theme, and have published a summary report of the issues raised, as a contribution to discussion on the Sex Offence (Scotland) Bill, currently progressing through the Scottish Parliament.

Sexperience – The Sex Education Show
A weekly television show on Channel 4, Tuesdays at 8pm, complemented by a well-resourced website which also archives all the programmes. Presented by journalist Anna Richardson, this six-part series “aims to tackle the nation's sexual ignorance and reticence by capturing a wide range of different personal experiences of sexual issues and problems, as well as offering candid advice.”
The series will discuss the sex lives of teenagers as they talk about pornography, abortion, STIs, homosexuality, peer pressure and pregnancy. The series also includes the results of a television survey of teenage attitudes to sex.

Engaging excluded young people in sports and physical activity
New - Energising Lives: A Guide to Promoting Physical Activity in Primary Care
The guide provides the evidence base for promoting physical activity and summarises the current guidelines around recommended levels of physical activity for different life stages and supports practitioners by translating these recommendations into everyday routine advice and encouragement for patients. Energising Lives has been divided into four parts for easy navigation and reference and is available in a spiral bound format for sharing information with patients.

This website with video and audio clips from interviews in which young people describe their experiences of health and illness. It is operated by the charity DIPEx. Sections include: Epilepsy, Sexual Health, Long Term Health Conditions. Young people can also join forums.

New - Equally Well: Report of the Ministerial Task Force on Health Inequalities
This concludes that health inequalities remain a significant challenge in Scotland. Priority areas include children, particularly in the early years. Recommendations include redesigning and refocusing public services through health inequalities learning networks. These will operate initially through a small number of test sites within community planning partnerships.
