26 Jan, Manchester. Some young people cope with difficulties more easily than others. This course from Young People in Focus will explore the factors that help children and young people manage, cope and even thrive in the face of adversity and disadvantage.

Listening to Children: Research and Consultation
Beginning 25 January 2010, The University of Edinburgh's Centre for Research on Families and Relationships is offering an advanced training course (aimed at those with a grounding in social research) designed for people who want to improve their skills in research and consultation with children and young people. There will be a combination of online learning and classroom sessions covering topics such as creative methods to ethical issues and dissemination. Course fee is £750 (£850 if you wish to study for credit). An additional course, Digital Technology and Research with Children and Young People, will be also be offered on 13th and 14th May 2010 and that course fee is £250.

Forum Theatre training with Julian Boal
6 and 7 Feb 2010. Julian is the son of Augusto Boal, the creator of Theatre of the Oppressed which uses participative drama methods to empower vulnerable groups in their communities. This method is useful for professionals such as teachers, drama workers, youth workers, activists, community educators or social workers.

NEW - Youth Justice workshop
5th Feb, Edinburgh. This half day workshop from The Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Service will look at a range of practices for dealing with young people involved, or at risk of being involved, in offending. Run by Fergus McNeill, Professor of Criminology and Social Work in the Glasgow School of Social Work. Prior to becoming an academic in 1998, Fergus worked for a number of years in residential drug rehabilitation and as a criminal justice social worker.

NEW - Child Protection Basic Awareness Training for Trainers

These full day workshops from North East Scotland Child Protection Committee (NESCPC)
aim to ensure that there is a consistent approach in the level of training being provided in the region. This workshop will provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to allow them to deliver basic awareness raising courses to other staff and volunteers. The course focuses on child protection in context, recognising potential abuse and neglect.
