Barnardo’s is a large U.K. child care charity whose vision is that the lives of all children and young people should be free from poverty, abuse and discrimination and the organisation is focused on helping the most vulnerable children and young people transform their lives and fulfill their potential.
In Scotland Barnardo’s run’s 62 services which help 10,000 children, young people and their families. These services cover a wide range of work including:
- Education support
- Homelessness (both young people and families)
- Young people leaving care
- Family and parenting support
- Youth justice
- Children’s rights
- Disability
- Community development
- Support to children who have been sexually abused
- Work with children and young people who display sexually harmful behaviour
- Foster care
- Post-adoption support
- Support to children living with domestic abuse or parental substance misuse
- Young people with their own substance misuse problems
- Children and young people who are sexually exploited
- Children and young people whose emotional well being and mental health is at risk.
We also aim to influence national policy about children, young people and families and promote children and young people’s participation in this influencing process. Our Participation Strategy also aims to increase the level of participation of service users in the decision-making of the organisation.
An increasing number of our services have a strong educational component. They either directly provide education or work closely with schools and provide in-school support programmes.

The Bridges Project is committed to the principle that young people should shape and determine their own lives. We have services in Edinburgh, East and Midlothian.
We help young people become more independent, more successful in finding employment or education, and more able to manage their lives. We do this by working in partnership with other agencies and local authorities, and through our own three services:
Access and Advice
Local and up-to-the-minute information and advice on issues like housing, employment, health, money, benefits, welfare rights, and more
Education & Training
Person-centred programmes which focus on core skills, job-finding, and basic skills such as literacy and numeracy, as well as personal development areas like confidence, problem-solving, and communication
Specialist Support
One-to-one assistance with a wide range of personal issues. We can arrange to meet young people at the project, in their homes, or at an agreed venue.
