Training Services
The Training Services provides training opportunities to 16-18 year olds throughout Edinburgh City and East, West and Midlothian. These places are available under the Get Ready for Work Programme funded by Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh & Lothian.
The programme starts with a four-week initial training & induction period, followed by an extended period of training and work experience. A wide range of possible skill areas is available tailored to suit individuals. All students work towards the Skill-start level 1 SVQ. Additional supports are available to cater for difficulties which young people may experience, and all students are reviewed/assessed at least every eight weeks to check progress and set targets. The project aims to assist all its students to move forward into employment or further training. When ready, the young people go on placement which assists their training development and provides a realistic work experience.
School Based Work
Project staff work in the local primary and secondary schools and offer a range of supports and services to the schools and their pupils. The services provided range from individual counselling, support, advocacy and problem solving with individuals to working alongside school staff to provide group-work programmes on a wide range of topics.

Every secondary School in Scotland has a careers advisor who is either based in the school or visits on a regular basis. Their job is to give pupils guidance in respect of career choices. They will provide information and advice about jobs, training and post secondary school study. We also have a team of inclusion workers who work in partnership with schools and other agencies providing a signpost, advocacy and support service to disaffected 16-18 year olds.
Careers Scotland is working in partnership with the Scottish Government providing early intervention NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) work in schools across Scotland. This is a motivational programme which helps school leavers avoid unemployment. The programme, Activate, is being piloted in more than 90 of the country’s schools to help school pupils move into the world of work.
The programme is designed to provide extra support in the final three months of school and is aimed at young people who are likely to face most difficulties in moving into a job, college or training place. Activate is delivered in schools by Careers Scotland advisers, through a series of motivational group work sessions that concentrate on employability skills and enterprise activities. Activate groups are targeted at S4 and S5 students who have been identified as young people who may struggle to make a smooth transition from school.
Participants are likely to face a wide range of issues including low self-esteem, lack of confidence and poor communication skills. The activities are designed to relate to the young people’s lives and increase their motivation, confidence and job seeking skills.

Community Service Volunteers is the UK’s largest volunteering and training organisation. Some education authorities have already welcomed partnerships with CSV whereby vulnerable and disruptive pupils are provided with the peer support and friendship of a full-time CSV volunteer as a means of developing the pupils' self-worth, motivation and interests. In some cases, pupils also take up opportunities to volunteer in their community. We are keen to build on our experience and relationships with education authorities and schools to date, in order to provide new pathways to learning for non-school attendees by developing the scope of our existing projects or setting up new ones.
CSV currently runs a number of befriending and volunteering projects which aim to:
- Reduce school exclusions by increasing levels of support to pupils in school
- Assist with the process of reintegration into education
- Maximise access to education for pupils with special needs
- Provide extra support to help 'looked after' children through their school careers
- Support pupils through the transition from primary to secondary school
- Provide out of school mentoring to pupils with behavioural problems.
