Enable logoENABLE's vision is a society where children and adults with learning disabilities are full members of the community and contribute to community life. We are committed to improving the lives of, and opportunities for, people with learning disabilities and their families by developing and providing services that support people to live, work and enjoy a meaningful role in everyday life. We operate across Scotland and in most areas we have local managers who work alongside people with learning disabilities and their carers to design and develop the type of services people want.

ENABLE Scotland supports young people with learning disabilities in school and in their local communities. We also assist young people in the transition period from school into work or further education. We set up and develop innovative services to enable people with learning disabilities to live, attend school, work and enjoy meaningful participation in their local communities. We work in schools with pupils with ASN in mainstream school, and their teachers, to improve attendance and make school more relevant to them. Beyond school we also work to improve leisure and work opportunities to help young people with learning needs to be included in their community along with their peers.

We work to build the capacity of mainstream providers so that they have the confidence to include children and young people with ASN in their services as equal members and to give them equal opportunities.

Enquire logoEnquire is the Scottish advice service on additional support for learning. We give advice and info to families, professionals, children and young people. Advice and info is given via our telephone and email helpline, through the wide range of publications we produce for both adults and young people, and also through tailored training, outreach projects, info stalls, etc. There are a diverse range of reasons why a young person might need additional support to get the most out of school. Here are some examples, but please bear in mind there are lots more:

  • Because of family circumstance, speaking English as a second language, learning or physical disabilities, being bullied,
  • Difficulties with spelling or reading, being homeless or moving around a lot, having caring responsibilities, being a more able pupil,
  • Missing out on school due to ill health or because they've been excluded, or finding it difficult to join in or make friends.
